The angiosperms (from Greek: angeion, “vessel” + sperma, “seed”) are the flowering plants (Magnoliophyta). They are the dominant land plants, with approximately 370,000 species, and account for more than 95% of all living plant species on Earth.
Angiosperms evolved, likely from the earlier gymnosperms, during the Triassic period from the early to mid-Jurassic period. The first flowering plant appears to have been “Archaeopteris”, a primitive tree with fern-like leaves.
Angiosperms are the group of plants that produce fruits and flowers. Today, around 80% of all seed plants are angiosperms. Conifers and Ginkgo make up less than 1% of all seed plants combined. In addition, the first angiosperms evolved in the mid-Cretaceous period, about 125 million years ago, and have been a fundamental part of the Earth’s ecosystems ever since. It was also the time of massive extinction (the K-T Extinction), which may have been caused by a meteorite impact in what is today the Gulf of Mexico.
